Stairways often need light because they may be interior spaces without access to outside light. This stairway is in the home of the Phoenix studio's artist. The framed opening is actually the entrance to the attic crawl space. the opening was constructed in the original plans of the house, and was later framed out in oak to accept the 24" by 26" stained glass panel. A light was placed behind the glass and connected to the wall switches on the lower and upper stairs. The moulding and glass panel are set with screws and are easily removed to allow access to the attic.

The long interior stairway lit up by the stained glass panel.

A close-up of the panel constructed in opalescent glass to hide the contents of the attic space behind the window.
